What to know before visiting Amritsar

Amritsar is a vibrant and historically significant city in the state of Punjab, India. It is a major commercial, cultural, and transportation hub, known as the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion. The city's name is derived from the "Amrit Sarovar" (Pool of Nectar), a holy tank built by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, around which the city developed.

Amritsar is a major tourist destination, primarily due to its spiritual and historical landmarks:

  • The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib): This is the preeminent spiritual site of Sikhism and the city's most famous landmark. The temple, with its stunning golden facade, is located in the middle of a sacred pool and is an architectural marvel. It welcomes visitors of all faiths and hosts the world's largest community kitchen (Langar), serving free meals to all.

  • Jallianwala Bagh: This historic garden is a solemn memorial to the victims of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. Visitors can see the bullet marks on the walls and the Martyrs' Well, a poignant reminder of India's struggle for independence.

  • Wagah Border Ceremony: Located about 28 kilometers from Amritsar, the Wagah border is a popular tourist attraction where a daily flag-lowering ceremony takes place at sunset. The "Beating Retreat" ceremony, performed by soldiers from both the Indian Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers, is a thrilling display of national pride and military precision.

  • Partition Museum: Located in the Town Hall, this museum documents the stories, art, and artifacts related to the partition of British India in 1947, a deeply impactful event for the city and its people.

  • Gobindgarh Fort: This historic fort, with its rich history dating back to the 18th century, has been converted into a live museum and cultural hub. It offers various attractions, including museums, light and sound shows, and traditional Punjabi performances.

Beyond its major sites, Amritsar is also famous for its delicious Punjabi cuisine, bustling markets, and the warm hospitality of its people.
