Gurez Valley is a hidden gem nestled in the high Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir, about 123 kilometers from Srinagar. Known for its breathtaking natural beauty and serene atmosphere, it offers an escape from the usual tourist trails. The valley is defined by its pristine landscapes, including vast meadows, towering snow-capped mountains, and the gushing Kishanganga River (also known as the Neelum River).

Major Attractions and Activities

• Razdan Pass: The journey to Gurez is an adventure in itself, passing through the high-altitude Razdan Pass. At an elevation of around 3,300 meters, the pass offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and valleys.

• Dawar: This is the main town and a cultural hub of Gurez Valley. Visitors can explore the traditional wooden houses, interact with the friendly local Dard people, and experience their unique culture and hospitality. Dawar is the perfect base for exploring the rest of the valley.

• Habba Khatoon Peak: A pyramid-shaped peak named after the legendary Kashmiri poetess, Habba Khatoon. This majestic mountain is a prominent landmark and a favorite spot for photographers, especially during sunrise and sunset. A small stream, known as Habba Khatoon Spring, also flows from its base.

• Tulail Valley: A short drive from Dawar, the Tulail Valley is a paradise for nature lovers. Known for its verdant meadows, charming villages, and clear streams, it's an ideal place for camping, picnicking, and trekking.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Gurez Valley is from late May to early October. During these months, the Razdan Pass is open for travel, and the weather is pleasant, with lush green meadows and wildflowers in full bloom. The valley receives heavy snowfall in winter, and the pass remains closed, cutting off road access for about six months.

How to Reach

Gurez Valley is primarily accessible by road. The journey from Srinagar to Gurez takes about 5-7 hours. While there is no direct bus service, travelers can take a shared taxi or a private car from Srinagar to Bandipora and then another from Bandipora to Dawar. Helicopter services are also available during the winter when the road is closed.

Note: Due to its proximity to the Line of Control (LoC), Gurez is a restricted area. Indian nationals must carry valid ID proof for checkposts along the way. Foreign tourists are generally not allowed to visit the valley.
